Activities in Mal Pais

Mal Pais translated means “Bad land” called by early settlers because of it’s lack of water. Of course, there is nothing bad about this coastal village, with it’s rocky coastline, and unspoiled nature. At the south end of town past the port and canopy tours, the road leads to the entrance of the “hidden beach.” The hidden beach is located at the back entrance of Cabo Blanco National Park. In any of these beaches, you can wade the coastline or photograph different marine life. In addition, you can try some of the best snorkeling in the region. Finally, you can finish up your day on the beach by treating yourself to freshly caught fish. Watching games on the ocean front soccer field is something you won’t want to miss.

Although Malpais directly borders the Cabo Blanco Nature Reserve, there is no entrance from this side. To explore Cabo Blanco, it is best to take a canopy or horse tour. Located in the national park is one of the areas most scenic beaches, Playa Cuevas, which is the “secret beach” which is not so secret anymore. The small white-sand cove is surrounded by a rocky outcrop and is also one of the best snorkeling spots in Mal Pais.
